Leo Loggia Intrados/ Spandrel Stuccoes

by:   da Udine   |    Lorenzetto      patron:   Leo X      category: Fresco    location: Papal Palace

note:  While Giovanni da Udine is closely associated with many of the stucchetti of the loggia, Dacos (2008) has also documented the presence of Giorgio di Giovanni in the: - Vault 10 spandrels that feature stuccoes of Victory (he is credited with a Seated Victory as well in Vault 12's spandrels that bears the date "1513") - scene of sacrifice that appears in one of the Vault 5 spandrels - cupid that appears in Vault 2 spandrels - fallen man with standing compatriot on the exterior intrados of Vault 3 - man with a book on the exterior intrados of Vault 8 - Mercury in Vault 12 spandrel -Woman and Man in the Vault 13 spandrel Lorenzetto is also credited with several, including: - a stucco relief of a woman guiding a chariot that appears on the exterior intrados of Vault 1 - a depiction of a Mithraic bull-slaying on the exterior intrados of Vault 2 - Fortuna on the pier to the right of Pilaster 1 - Pax, Victory, and Juno, on the pier to the right of Pilaster 2 - Annona on the pier to the right of Pilaster 3 - Roma and Mars on the pier to the left of Pilaster 3 Most of these vignettes appear to have come from study of ancient variations (relief carvings, coins, etc.). There are points, though, of contemporary reference. The relief, for instance, of Mucius Scaevola, was based on more recent Roman prototypes; the appearance of Hanno the Elephant as well (on the exterior intradros of Vault 4) would have been derived from the pachiderm's recent sojourns to the city.
