Costantino Saint Peter

Saint Peter with Allegorical Figures (1520)

by:   Penni   |    Romano      patron:   Leo X      category: Fresco    location: Sala di Costantino

note:  The surviving documentation pertaining to the artists at work in the Sala di Costantino mostly pertains to those not actually at work in the space: between April and December 1520 Sebastiano del Piombo, Michelangelo, and Leonardo Sellaio exchange seven letters between them discussing Sebastiano's desires to retake some of the work to be done in the Vatican as his own (and, simultaneously, take it from the hands of Raphael's garzoni (Ferrara 1992, pp. 5-18). There is a letter, though, from Tommaso Vincidor in Brussels dated 20 July 1521 to Pope Leo X in which Vincidor notes "Io ò fato vinti cartoni per vinto peci che vano intorno a la salla quali dipinge li mei compagni, ciuè Zulio et io Ian Francischo" (Ferrara 1992, p. 20), which implies his role in the room to some extent.
