Raphael based this composition on one of Albrecht Dürer's prints of Christ Carrying the Cross (https://www.metmuseum.org/art/collection/search/388412); Hartt noted interventions by Giulio Romano in this painting; Ferino Pagden (1989) adds that interventions were certain by both Romano and Penni (123); Henry and Joannides (2013) relay Mozo's observation that the underdrawing of Christ's head does not appear to be by Raphael (p. 97).
