Eliodoro vault 4

Putti with Medici impresa (1514)

by:   Raphael      category: Drawing

note:  This drawing was prepared for pendentive to the left of Deliverance of Saint Peter; as Joannides (1983) notes: "the exact level of Raphael's participation in the design both of the Repulse of Attila and of the dado of this room is controversial, but his pupils were certainly responsible for most of the execution of [Repulse of Attila]. It is strange that Raphael should have produces one of his most beautiful drawings for a distinctly minor figure. . . .perhaps it was because the putto carries the impresa of his patron that Raphael prepared the figure himself" (114)
