note:  Enigmatic double-portrait that reveals identities still debated among scholars. Henry and Joannides (2013) boldly retitling this work Self-Portrait with Giulio Romano. The identification of the figure at left as Raphael is rather assured, particularly in comparison with other self-portraits (and with the likeness that appeared subsequented in the fresco decorations of the Villa Lante al Gianicolo). The figure in the foregound has been interpreted as a number of figures, including workshop memhers like Romano and Polidoro.
