Pope Leo X with Cardinals

Pope Leo X with Cardinals Giulio de' Medici and Luigi de' Rossi (1518-1519)

by:   Raphael   |    Romano      patron:   Leo X      category: Painting    location: Papal Palace
related artifacts: Leo X study

note:  A 1518 letter from Alfonsina Orsini to her secretary in Rome notes that a painting depicting the Pope was on display in her home; a copy of this painting was made in 1525 by Andrea del Sarto that made its way into the collection of Giulio Romano (whom, as Vasari relays in the life of del Sarto, was completed duped into believing his work was Raphael's original). Evidence exists, however, to suggest that Giulio Romano assisted Raphael in this original version.
