note:  Also known as Madonna of the Veil or Madonna of Santa Maria del Popolo as it once lived within that church alongside the famed portrait of Julius II. Connection to Justice is based on the parallel variation of the head of the Madonna. Vsrious copies reportedly exist - as Dussler (1971) recounts, "several of these have repeatedly been claimed to be the lost original, among them the painting formerly in Florence, the property of Sir Kennedy Laurie, that at Kyburg near Winterthur, Switzerland, owned by Oberst Pfau , and in 1934 a very mediocre speciment of unknown provenance which came into the posession of the Dutch ambassador in Rome, Mr. van Royen . . . A version in the J. Paul Getty Collection was exhibited in 1965 in the National Gallery, London;. . ."
