Madonna Diadem

Madonna of the Diadem (1512-1514)

by:   Penni   |    Raphael   |    Romano      patron:   Giovo      category: Painting
related artifacts: Madonna of Loreto

note:  Cavacaselle (1882) notes interventions by Penni here; Dussler (p. 28): "This composition has been used in a picture by Perino del Vaga, who also added architectural ruins (Rome, Borghese Gallery No. 464; Pergola, cat. II No. 159; Freedberg, II, Fig. 528). It would seem that general scholarly concensus is that this work shows a disconnect between Raphael and Penni or Romano; while some suggest it was designed by Raphael and executed by Romano/Penni, Henry/Joannides (2013) have proposed that perhaps the figural grouping in the foreground was Raphael's contribution between 1512-1514, with the landscape being completed closer to 1520 (see no. 54).
